The woodland here runs thick and proper green, a genuine escape from Swansea's sprawl without needing to drive far. Gwern-Fadog Plantation is a working forest rather than a manicured park - the paths wind through planted conifers and older mixed woodland, the kind of place where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of traffic. It's free to wander, which is always a good start.

The main appeal is straightforward: decent walking through genuine forest, quiet enough that you notice things. The terrain rolls a bit, nothing brutal, but there are enough ups and downs to feel like proper exercise rather than a stroll. Bring decent boots if it's been wet - the paths can turn soft. Allow a couple of hours if you want to loop properly without rushing. Early morning is best; you'll have the place to yourself.

Families with older kids will manage fine here. Younger ones might find it a touch dull after an hour - there's no play area, no visitor centre, just trees and paths. But if you're after genuine woodland walking rather than amenities, it's excellent value. History buffs won't find much to detain them; this is about the forest itself, not what happened there.

It sits just outside Swansea proper, making it a natural addition to a stay at Riverside Holiday Park or SWDA Riverside, both within walking distance. Pop here for a morning walk, grab lunch back in town. Not dramatic, but honest and effective.
