Grwyne Fawr Reservoir

The water sits there quietly in the Black Mountains, about ten miles west of Hereford, and honestly it's the walk that matters more than the destination. Grwyne Fawr Reservoir is a proper spot for getting out of the car and stretching your legs, surrounded by steep hillsides and that particular silence you only get in upland valleys.

You're looking at a modest reservoir - don't expect the drama of somewhere like Lake Vyrnwy. But that's rather the appeal. The walk in from the valley floor is straightforward enough, through mixed woodland and open moorland, and the water itself sits dark and reflective at the base of the hills. It's good for photographers chasing moody light, and walkers will find it a natural turning point on longer rambles through the Black Mountains.

Historically minded types won't find much here beyond the dam itself, but the setting is what counts. This is proper rural Herefordshire, far enough from the A49 that you actually feel away from things. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - you'll spot various species around the water.

Allow a couple of hours if you're making it a proper outing, though thirty minutes of walking from the car will give you the main views. Free to visit, no facilities at the reservoir itself so sort yourself out in Hereford before you head out. It works well as a half-day activity alongside the campsite options - Olchon Valley or Chapel House Farm are close enough to make it viable. Spring and autumn are your best bets weatherwise, though early morning in summer clears the hills nicely.
