Portland's Victorian prison isn't the sort of place you'd stumble upon by accident - which is rather the point. The Grove Prison Museum occupies the actual former jail, a proper institution that operated for over a century until closure. You walk through the actual cells, see the exercise yards, and get a genuine sense of what daily life looked like behind those thick stone walls. It's not sensationalised or theatrical - just factual and rather sobering.

Histor buffs will find plenty to sink their teeth into. The prison held all sorts - from petty criminals to more serious offenders - and the displays chart changing attitudes to punishment and rehabilitation across different eras. The architecture itself tells you things about Victorian thinking: the isolation, the control, the grim logic of the design.

Realistic warning: this isn't a day-long attraction. You're probably looking at 90 minutes if you're thorough, maybe two hours absolute maximum. Children might find it interesting for the "forbidden" appeal of being inside a real prison, though younger kids could get a bit unsettled by the confined spaces.

If you're staying at Chesil Beach Lodge Park or one of the other resorts scattered around Weymouth, you're well-positioned for a half-day visit. Portland itself is rather exposed and windswept - lovely if you like that sort of drama, but you won't want to base your entire holiday here. Best combined with a trip to the beach at Chesil, which is genuinely spectacular and only a few minutes' drive away.
