Broadcroft Quarry Butterfly Reserve

The quarry itself is long exhausted, but what's emerged from the rubble is genuinely worthwhile - a working butterfly reserve that's turned an old industrial scar into proper habitat. You're walking through scrubland and grassland where various species overwinter and breed, with the landscape having that slightly raw, reclaimed-land feel that some people love and others find a bit ordinary.

It's educational rather than showy. The reserve team has done real work here establishing native plants and managing the site for Marbled White butterflies and other species that need specific conditions. Visit between late June and August if you want to actually see butterflies in numbers - spring and autumn visits are quieter but the wildflowers still draw them in. The walk itself is gentle and takes about an hour depending on how much you potter about.

History buffs might find the quarry heritage interesting - you can still see the extraction scars - but this isn't a visitor attraction with interpretation boards or a cafe. Families with young kids under six will probably get restless. Walkers who like a purpose (ticking off butterfly species, photographing orchids) will get more from it than casual strollers.

It's free to access and close enough to Weymouth for a morning visit if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Chesil Beach Lodge Park is the standout option among them. Worth combining with a beach walk or a proper look at the Chesil Beach shingle formation itself, which is genuinely remarkable.
