GrogPort Picnic Area

The pull-off at GrogPort is one of those stops you make because the road demands it, not because the guidebook insists. Down a short track near Campbeltown, you'll find a proper working harbour with a scattering of picnic tables that face straight out across Campbeltown Loch. The working boats come and go - fishing vessels mostly - and there's something calming about watching them while you're unwrapping a sandwich.

It's a five-minute affair if you're just stretching your legs, though walkers often use it as a waypoint rather than a destination. The loch views are genuine enough, and on a clear day you get a real sense of how the landscape opens out here. The tables are weathered but functional, and there's usually enough shelter if the wind isn't particularly vicious.

Families staying at Carradale Bay Holiday Park - less than five miles away - will find this useful for a quick break between activities rather than something to plan an afternoon around. History buffs might appreciate the old harbour context, but there's not much interpretation on site to satisfy genuine curiosity.

Free to use, no facilities worth mentioning. Go if you're in the area and want a spot to sit with decent views; don't reroute your day for it. Best on a settled day when the wind's not making everyone squint.
