Gro Hill

The walk up Gro Hill rewards you with proper expansive views across the Elan Valley - the sort of landscape that makes you understand why people choose Mid Wales for their holidays. It's not a demanding climb by any stretch, but it's steep enough to feel like you've actually done something once you reach the summit.

The hill sits just above Rhayader, close enough for a half-day outing if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks. Elan Oaks is practically on your doorstep at just over two miles away, and both The Pines and Wyeside are within easy striking distance if you want to base yourself in the area for a few days. From the top, you're looking out over water, moorland and distant peaks - it's genuinely lovely on a clear day, less so if the clouds roll in, which they do regularly round these parts.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The path is straightforward enough that families with capable kids won't struggle, though younger children might find the final push tedious. Allow an hour or so for the ascent and maybe half an hour lingering at the top. The real draw is how it fits into the broader Elan Valley experience - combine it with a drive around the reservoirs or a walk to one of the waterfalls, and you've got a proper day out sorted.

It costs nothing, obviously. Go when the weather's decent - you'll know within ten minutes of arriving whether visibility is worth your effort.
