Maen-serth

You'll find Maen-serth just outside Rhayader in the heart of Powys, tucked away in landscape that feels genuinely remote. It's a Bronze Age standing stone - the sort of place that makes you wonder how long it's been standing there and why someone bothered to haul such a massive rock into place thousands of years ago.

The stone itself commands attention. It's substantial, weathered by millennia, and there's something quietly powerful about standing in front of it without crowds or interpretation boards telling you what to think. The surrounding countryside is proper wild - moorland and hills stretching in every direction, which is exactly why Bronze Age people chose this spot. You're looking at genuine Mid Wales terrain, the kind that hasn't changed much in four thousand years.

Historically minded visitors and archaeology enthusiasts will find this worth the detour, though it's not the sort of site with facilities or guided tours. You just turn up and look at the stone. Photographers might stay longer than others, especially in low winter light. Realistically, allow twenty minutes unless you're doing a longer walk in the area.

It works brilliantly as a waypoint if you're based at Wyeside Caravan & Camping Park or Elan Oaks - both within a couple of miles - and planning a day exploring the wilder bits of Powys. The Elan Valley reservoirs nearby offer more visitor infrastructure if you need it. Maen-serth itself is free and accessible, though there's nothing telling you what you're looking at when you arrive. That's rather the point.
