Greystoke Forest

The walk up Greystoke Forest hits differently when you realise you're climbing through proper old woodland rather than tramping over moorland. It's a genuine forest - dense, atmospheric, the kind of place where light filters through in patches and you half expect to spot a deer round the next bend.

This is a peak walk rather than a destination in itself. The main appeal is the journey through the trees and the views once you break out onto higher ground. It's not a quick tick-box either - allow a good three to four hours if you're doing it properly from Penrith. The terrain can be muddy, especially after rain, and the forest path requires decent boots and a bit of navigation sense.

Walkers will absolutely have the best of it here. Family groups with young kids might find the trek tedious without the payoff of a dramatic summit or waterfall. It works best as part of a broader Lake District loop rather than a standalone morning jaunt.

Staying at one of the nearby parks - Carrock Glamping Pods is just three miles away, or Riverside Tourer if you need hook-ups - gives you a proper base to explore this quieter corner of Cumbria. The forest itself won't take all week, but combined with walks around Penrith and the surrounding fells, you've got solid territory. Go early in the day if possible. The forest's moody enough that grey skies actually suit it, but you want daylight to spare.
