About Grey Friar
It's the kind of fell that rewards walkers over hikers in a rush. There's no café, no facilities, no crowds - just stone, fell grass, and the wind. On a clear day (and you do need to time it right) you can pick out Windermere glinting in the distance. Families with older kids manage it fine; the paths are clear and well-trodden. Younger children might find the final push tedious, and the descent does test the knees.
Allow a solid three hours from Ambleside town centre, longer if you're not a regular hill walker. Spring and early autumn are best - summer can draw a bit more traffic, and winter requires you to know what you're doing. If you're camping nearby - Great Langdale Campsite is barely four miles away - it makes an excellent morning sortie before lunch. Skelwith Fold if you prefer a caravan. Grey Friar works best as part of a bigger day out rather than a standalone destination, but as a quick Lakes fellwalk, it's worth the slog.
