Greno Knoll

A windswept moorland knoll rises from the hills just outside Barnsley, offering commanding views across South Yorkshire's industrial and rural landscape. Greno Knoll isn't steep or dramatic, but that's rather the point - it's a proper hill walker's destination, the kind of place you climb for the sense of accomplishment and the perspective it gives you rather than for jaw-dropping altitude.

The walk up is straightforward, taking most people 30 to 45 minutes depending on fitness and pace. You'll pass through moorland and open country, with the landscape gradually expanding beneath your feet as you climb. On a clear day the views stretch far enough to make the climb feel worthwhile. In thick cloud, it's bleak and atmospheric in its own way.

This one rewards walkers and keen outdoor types more than casual visitors. Families with young children might find it a bit of a slog for what's essentially an exposed hilltop with limited facilities - there's nowhere to sit down with a picnic. But if you're staying in the area and fancy some proper leg-stretching, it slots in well with the broader hiking routes across the Pennine foothills.

If you're based at Greensprings Caravan Park nearby, Greno Knoll makes an excellent half-day outing. Free to visit, no tickets required. Best done on a morning when visibility is at its peak and the wind hasn't quite picked up. Allow a couple of hours round trip including time at the summit.
