Grendon Wood

Grendon Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Buckingham - the sort of place where you can actually lose the sound of traffic within five minutes. It's not vast, but it's dense enough that you genuinely feel like you've stepped away from things, with good paths running through beech and oak that turn brilliant in autumn.

Walkers will get the most out of this. It's manageable for families with older kids who don't need constant entertainment, though there's nothing flashy here - no play areas, no visitor centre, just trees and air. Plan on an hour to ninety minutes depending on how much you want to loop around. The paths are well-maintained, which is genuinely worth noting for a local wood.

If you're camping at Embers just down the road in Claydon, this works brilliantly as an early morning or late afternoon escape. It breaks up a park-based holiday without requiring a drive anywhere significant. Spring brings bluebells, which is when most people make the trek, though honestly the crowds aren't brutal even then.

Free access, no formalities - just turn up. Best visited outside peak weekends if you want any sense of solitude. It won't blow your mind, but it's exactly what you need when you've had enough of organised attractions and fancy a proper walk on your doorstep.
