Green Wood

Dense woodland just outside Lingfield spreads across Sussex like something from a proper fairy tale, all ancient oaks and tangled undergrowth that feels genuinely wild. Green Wood isn't manicured or tourist-heavy - it's the sort of place you stumble into expecting a quick woodland walk and end up losing two hours watching the light filter through the canopy.

The forest floor is thick with moss and fallen branches, and the paths wind in ways that make you grateful for a decent map or phone signal. It's excellent for walkers who want to escape the South East's more trampled spots, and families with kids old enough to handle uneven terrain will find it properly atmospheric rather than just another park circuit.

Historically this area has been working woodland for centuries - you'll notice old coppiced trees and sections that suggest active management alongside the wild bits. That's what makes it interesting rather than just pleasant.

There's no visitor centre or facilities listed, so come prepared. It's free access, and you can spend anywhere from forty minutes for a loop walk to half a day exploring deeper in. The closest base is Hook Farm Campsite, only six miles away, which means you could make Green Wood part of a broader Sussex woodland circuit without much faffing about.

Best visited when the ground isn't waterlogged, so late spring through autumn works. Early morning is lovely if you want any chance of spotting wildlife. Don't expect manicured paths - that's precisely the point.
