Green Hill

The walk up Green Hill from Colne is straightforward enough, though your legs will know about it by the time you crest the top. It's a proper Pennine fell - nothing dramatic, but the kind of place that rewards you with views across the valley once you've put in the effort. On a clear day you can see for miles across West Yorkshire, which makes the moderate slog worthwhile.

The summit itself is moorland rather than rocky, so don't expect dramatic scenery or scrambling. What you get instead is space and air and the sense of being properly away from things. It works well for fell walkers who want something genuine but not too technical, and families with older kids will manage it fine - though younger ones might flag a bit on the push to the top. Most people allow between two and three hours for the round trip from Colne.

Timing matters here. Morning light is best if you want photographs, and midweek visits mean fewer people on the path. Winter can be boggy underfoot, so waterproof boots aren't optional. The nearby holiday parks - Woodsworth Exploring and Tip Top Campsite both sit under five miles away and offer proper bases for exploring this stretch of the Pennines. If you're staying in the area, Green Hill slots nicely into a wider walking circuit; it's close enough to do in a morning or afternoon alongside other local routes.
