Green Hill

Green Hill is a modest peak just outside Dorchester, the sort of walk that takes forty minutes from the town centre and rewards you with views across the Dorset valleys. It's not dramatic - no scrambling, no exposed ridges - but it's proper useful if you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby and want to stretch your legs without driving anywhere.

The walk itself is straightforward. You'll pass through farmland and patches of woodland, gaining height gradually rather than in one brutal push. The summit offers a decent vantage point over the surrounding countryside. It's the kind of place where you genuinely notice the horizon change as you climb, even if the height gain is only a couple of hundred metres.

This works well for families with younger kids, or anyone wanting a gentle afternoon walk without much fuss. The elderly won't struggle with it. If you're the type who needs drama and drama alone, you'll find Green Hill a bit tame - there are sharper walks to be had in Dorset, particularly over on the coast.

It's free, obviously, and you can do it in an afternoon from Crossways Caravan Club or Parkdean Resorts Warmwell if you're staying in the area. Combine it with a poke around Dorchester town itself - the Roman history is genuinely interesting - and you've got a solid day. Go mid-morning to avoid the afternoon sun, and bring water. Nothing fancy required.
