Green Fell Plantation

You'll find yourself walking into proper woodland just outside Barnard Castle - Green Fell Plantation is the sort of forest that feels wilder than it has any right to be, given how close it sits to town. It's a working plantation, so the trees have been managed for decades, but that doesn't stop it being a genuinely atmospheric place to spend an hour or two on foot.

The main draw is the walking. Trails wind through mixed woodland - plenty of conifers mixed in with deciduous trees - and it's the kind of place where you notice the light filtering through the canopy in different ways depending on the time of day. There are no dramatic viewpoints or waterfalls to chase, so don't come expecting Teesdale's big scenic moments. This is about the simple pleasure of being among trees and breathing forest air.

Families with older kids who can manage a decent walk will get on well here. Younger children might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes. The paths are generally decent underfoot, though it can be muddy after rain - typical Pennine woodland conditions.

Access is free, and there are no official opening hours that I'm aware of, which means you can show up whenever suits you. Allow an hour minimum; two hours if you want to properly explore the plantation without rushing. It works nicely as a morning walk before heading into Barnard Castle itself, or pair it with one of the nearby campsites like The Old Armoury or the Caravan Club site if you're basing yourself here. Not a destination in itself, but a solid addition to a Teesdale camping trip.
