About Great Tor
Once you're up there, the landscape opens right out. You can see for miles across moorland and valley, with Lose Hill and Mam Tor forming the dramatic backbone of the skyline. On a clear day it's genuinely stunning. The walk itself takes most people about an hour up and down from the nearest parking, though if you're dawdling for photos it'll be longer.
This one's best for walkers rather than casual visitors - you do need a bit of fitness and proper footwear. The ground can be boggy in patches, and that final scramble isn't something you'd fancy with very small children in tow. That said, teenagers keen on Peak District classics will get plenty out of it.
If you're camping at Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, Great Tor makes a cracking morning or late afternoon walk before dinner. Go early if the weather's fair - the mist rolls in fast up here, and there's not much point making the climb if you can't see anything. Free to access, obviously. Allow a good couple of hours including breaks.
