Great Thornber

Great Thornber sits just across the border from Lancashire, a proper fell walk that rewards you with expansive views across Morecambe Bay. The summit itself is modest - nothing dramatic - but the approach from around Carnforth is what makes it worthwhile. On a clear day you're looking out towards the Lake District fells, and that's worth the leg work alone.

It's a walkers' attraction, frankly. Not a scramble, not technical, just a good steady climb through moorland with the payoff being those long-distance vistas. Allow two to three hours from the car park, depending on your fitness and how often you stop to admire the view. There's no visitor centre, no facilities at the top - just you, the wind, and several thousand acres of rolling Pennine country.

Families with older kids will get on fine. Younger ones might find it a bit relentless without the drama of, say, Pen-y-ghent or Whernside to keep them entertained. History types won't find much to chew on either - this is about the landscape, not the story.

If you're staying at Primrose Glamping Pods nearby, it's a solid way to fill a morning walk. Combine it with a wander around Carnforth town itself and you've got a decent day. It's not the flashiest peak in Yorkshire, but it's honest country and the views genuinely do stretch for miles.
