Great Pasture Hill

The walk up Great Pasture Hill rewards you with proper Pennine views that stretch across Lancashire and into Yorkshire. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a steady climb that takes the best part of an hour from the trailhead near Skipton - but the moorland plateau at the top gives you space to breathe and a real sense of having earned your vantage point.

You'll pass through rough grassland and a bit of bog if it's been wet, so decent boots matter. The summit sits at around 1,300 feet, which means the air gets noticeably cooler and clearer as you gain height. On a decent day, the views justify the effort. Winter and early spring are the best times - you avoid the tourist crush and the light is sharper.

This is a walk for people who actually like walking, not those after a quick photo stop. Families with kids aged eight and up who are used to moorland terrain will manage fine. Solo walkers and fell runners clearly love it. History buffs won't find much - it's landscape, not archaeology.

The climb is free, obviously. Allow two to three hours for a proper explore of the area. If you're based at Thornton Hall Country Park or Hedgerow Luxury Glamping nearby, both within three miles, you can knock this out as a morning expedition before heading to Skipton for lunch. It works well as part of a wider Pennine ridge walk rather than a standalone trip.
