Great Houber

The walk up Great Houber rewards you with one of those proper Lancashire views that makes the climb feel worthwhile. It's a modest peak by fell standards, but the limestone escarpment rising from the moorland around Skipton has real character, and on a clear day you can see right across to Pendle Hill.

This is walker territory, pure and simple. The ascent takes about forty minutes from the car park near Malham, and the terrain is straightforward enough for anyone with reasonable fitness - no scrambling or technical bits. You'll pass through moorland scattered with gritstone and limestone outcrops, which is lovely in late summer when the heather's flowering. The summit itself is modest, more a high point than a dramatic peak, but the sense of space and the fell-country stretching away in all directions makes it feel significant.

Go in the morning if you can. The light's better, and you'll avoid the afternoon walkers. Allow two hours return if you're taking it easy; an hour and a quarter if you're fit and focused. There's no charge - you just park and walk.

Pair it with a walk through Malham Tarn or Janet's Foss waterfall nearby, and you've got a solid day.
