Great Close Wood

Great Close Wood sits just outside Penrith and delivers exactly what you'd want from a Cumbrian forest walk - proper woodland, decent paths, and enough shade to make a humid summer afternoon bearable. The place feels genuinely wild without being impenetrable, with a mix of deciduous and conifer trees creating that lovely dappled light effect. You'll spend anything from 45 minutes to two hours depending on how many wrong turns you take and whether you stop to examine every moss-covered stone.

Walkers and families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground will get the most from it. The paths vary in condition, so decent boots aren't excessive, and there's a genuine sense of being away from things even though Penrith's practically on the doorstep. It's the kind of place where you actually hear birds instead of car engines.

Access appears free, which is refreshing. The wood works brilliantly as a break between longer Lake District adventures - pop in for a couple of hours before heading to Ullswater Holiday Park or one of the nearer sites like Sykeside Camping Park. Spring's excellent for bluebells, autumn for the colour change, though honestly any season beats sitting in a tent waiting for weather.

If you're after dramatic viewpoints or a destination walk with a proper reward at the end, this isn't it. But if you want actual woodland - the kind where you can think without overthinking - Great Close Wood delivers without the crowds you'd find elsewhere.
