Gravel Pit Hill

The walk up Gravel Pit Hill, just outside Ringwood, gives you views across the New Forest that justify the leg work. It's not a dramatic climb - more of a steady pull through mixed woodland - but the summit clears enough to see properly across the heathland and forestry that makes this corner of Wiltshire rather special.

You're looking at maybe forty minutes from the car park if you're not dawdling. Families with younger kids might find the gait a bit much, but anyone who hikes regularly will barely notice the gradient. The real appeal here is that it's accessible without being trivial, and the views feel earned rather than handed to you on a plate.

This works well as a morning sortie if you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Longbeech or Hill Cottage Farm are close enough that you could be back for lunch. It pairs nicely with a wander through the forest proper on the same day, so it's the kind of spot that fits into a broader park holiday rather than standing alone as a destination.

Bring proper footwear; the ground can be boggy even days after rain, and tree roots snag more than you'd expect. The exposed bits at the top do get breezy, so layers are your friend. On clear days the visibility is genuinely worth the climb. On grey days it's functional rather than memorable, so timing matters a bit.
