Grange Withy Bed

Wild garlic carpets the woodland floor here each spring, filling the air with that distinctive peppery scent that makes you want to breathe deeper. Grange Withy Bed sits quietly in the Isle of Wight's countryside, just outside Newport, where ancient coppiced trees create a proper old-school woodland experience.

This isn't manicured parkland - it's working woodland where you'll find traditional management practices still in action. The withy beds themselves are fascinating if you're into that sort of thing; these willows have been harvested for basket-making for centuries, creating an almost sculptural landscape of stumpy regrowth.

Families with older kids who don't mind muddy boots will get the most from a wander here. There are no marked trails or visitor facilities, so it's very much a case of exploring at your own pace. Spring and early summer offer the best rewards, when bluebells join the wild garlic show and bird activity peaks.

Allow an hour or two for a proper poke about, though you could easily spend longer if the weather's kind. It's free to access as far as anyone knows, being typical countryside rather than a formal attraction.

With Compton Farm and Tom's Eco Lodge both within walking distance, plus Tapnell Farm just a mile and a half away, it makes a lovely contrast to more structured holiday park activities. Perfect for burning off energy before heading back to base.
