Brook Down

Brook Down sits just west of Newport and gives you proper views across the Isle of Wight's interior - nothing dramatic in the Alpine sense, but enough height to feel like you've actually climbed somewhere. It's a gentle walk rather than a slog, which means families and casual walkers will manage it without complaint.

The peak itself is modest, the sort of place where you stand at the top and think "right, I can see my hotel from here". On a clear day you get sweeping sightlines across the island's chalk ridges and farmland. In the mist, it's atmospheric but frankly a bit underwhelming. Go when the weather's decent or don't bother.

You'll want maybe 45 minutes to an hour, including a sit-down if the view grabs you. There's no entrance fee - it's just a walk-up spot. Closest facilities are back in Newport, a short drive away. If you're based at Compton Farm or Tapnell Farm - both just under two miles away - this makes an easy morning outing before heading to the beaches. Grange Farm Camping (2.7 miles) is also well-positioned.

Worth doing? If you're on the island for a week and the weather cooperates, absolutely. If you've got a day trip from the mainland, there are better uses of your time - the coastal cliffs near Shanklin or Alum Bay will leave a stronger impression. Brook Down's the sort of place you climb because you're staying nearby, not because you've travelled specifically to see it.
