Wellow Down

Climbing steadily through the rolling countryside west of Newport, you'll find one of the island's quieter summits offering proper views without the crowds that descend on the Needles or St Catherine's Down. Wellow Down sits at a respectable height, giving you sweeping panoramas across the central Wight landscape - on a clear day you can pick out the Solent beyond.

Walkers will appreciate the relative peace here. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch, but the gentle ascent makes it accessible for most fitness levels, and families with older children should manage it fine. The downland grass feels springy underfoot, and there's something satisfying about having a proper hill summit largely to yourself.

From holiday parks like Tapnell Farm or Compton Farm nearby, it's an easy drive to the base of the down before setting off on foot. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're taking your time. The views reward the effort - you get a real sense of the island's geography from up here, with the distinctive shape of the downs rolling away in both directions.

History buffs might find it a touch underwhelming compared to the ancient monuments elsewhere on the island, but for a peaceful morning's walk with genuine rewards at the top, Wellow Down does the job nicely.
