Grange Fell (Wainwright)

The walk up Grange Fell from Keswick takes about two hours if you're not dawdling, though most people are. It's one of Wainwright's Lake District fells - modest in height at 1,385 feet but punchy enough to earn proper views across Derwentwater and towards Catbells. The fell itself is rocky and steep in places, which keeps things interesting rather than a plod.

What makes it worthwhile is the variety. You start through woodland, emerge onto open fell, and the ridge walk at the top feels genuinely exposed. On clear days the Helvellyn range spreads out behind you. On grey ones, well, you get the Lakeland experience in miniature - moody and atmospheric. Kids aged ten upwards will manage it fine; younger ones might struggle with some of the steeper sections.

There's no admission charge and no facilities on the fell itself, so bring water and something to eat. The path starts near Grange Bridge, just south of Keswick town centre, making it accessible without a long drive. Allow three to four hours if you're stopping for photos and a sit-down at the top.

For a park-based holiday, Castlerigg Hall is perfectly placed - less than five miles away and excellent for families wanting easy access to multiple fells. Grange Fell pairs well with a circuit taking in Catbells or Walla Crag. It's not the Lake District's most dramatic peak, but it delivers genuine satisfaction for the effort invested.
