Grange Fell

The walk up Grange Fell takes about forty minutes from the car park, and you're rewarded with views across Dumfries & Galloway that stretch for miles on a clear day. It's a proper fell rather than a mountain - nothing technical, just a steady climb through moorland with the occasional rocky section to keep things interesting.

Lockerbie sits just south of here, so it's easily combined with a morning exploring the town before heading out for the afternoon assault on the summit. The fell itself is straightforward enough for families with older kids, though the terrain can be boggy depending on the weather, so waterproof boots aren't optional. You're looking at roughly two hours if you take it steadily and actually stop to enjoy the panorama.

What makes Grange Fell worthwhile is its accessibility without being trivial. You get genuine hill walking without needing to be an experienced scrambler. History types might be less engaged - there's no ruined castle up top or ancient settlement, just the landscape itself. But if you're after a solid afternoon hike with proper views, this delivers.

If you're staying at Cressfield Caravan Park nearby, this makes an excellent half-day outing. The paths are well-maintained and the whole thing feels less crowded than some of the better-known Scottish peaks. Conditions can deteriorate quickly in winter, but spring through autumn is solid walking season. Free to access, no facilities on the fell itself, so bring water and snacks.
