Goodwood Racecourse

The Downs around Chichester have hosted horse racing since 1802, and Goodwood Racecourse still commands one of the most dramatic settings in British racing. You're perched on high ground with proper views across Sussex farmland - it's the sort of place where the landscape matters as much as the sport itself.

On race days the place comes alive. The atmosphere is genuinely fun rather than stuffy, even if you're not a serious punter. Families pile in, the bookies shout, people dress up or dress down depending on their mood. The Glorious Goodwood festival in late July is the main event - five days that draw crowds from across the south. There's racing most Saturdays during the season too. If you're camped nearby at somewhere like Chichester Lakeside or Bow Hill Farm, it's a straightforward drive or even a taxi from Chichester town.

You'll need to check admission prices and hours on the Goodwood website before you go - they vary wildly depending on what's on. A standard race day costs less than a big festival fixture. Allow a good four to five hours if you're making an afternoon of it, longer if you want food and proper exploring. The racing itself runs through summer and autumn mainly.

For non-racing visitors, the grounds and views alone make it worth a look on quieter days, though the racecourse does close between meetings. It's a proper Sussex landmark and a genuine part of the area's fabric - not just somewhere tourists tick off.
