Golspie Curling Pond

A small, shallow loch just outside Dornoch in Sutherland that freezes solid most winters - hence the name. It's the sort of place that looks modest from the car park, but once you're down at the water's edge, there's something rather appealing about its simplicity. The pond itself is fringed with grass and the occasional hardy tree, with views out towards the wider Highland landscape. On a clear day it's genuinely pleasant; on a grey one, less so.

This is really a spot for locals and die-hard nature types rather than a day-trip destination in its own right. If you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Grannie's Heilan' Hame Holiday Park five miles away, it's a decent short walk or drive to stretch your legs and see what the local countryside offers. In winter, when the ice is thick enough, you might spot curlers - though don't bank on it. In summer it's just a quiet loch with no particular features or facilities.

Allow 20 minutes unless you're genuinely into ornithology or want a proper moorland walk from here. Free to visit, obviously. The real value is contextual - it works as a breathing space during a wider exploration of Sutherland's coast and glens, not as a standalone outing. If you're visiting Dornoch itself for its cathedral or beach, this could fill a gap, but don't reroute your itinerary specially.
