Godmersham Park Heritage Centre

The old manor house at Godmersham holds far more than you'd expect from a Kent village heritage centre. This is where Jane Austen's brother Edward lived, and if you're the sort of person who cares about that connection, you'll find the period rooms genuinely engaging. The house itself dates back centuries, and wandering through the rooms gives you a real sense of Georgian life without the usual museum stuffiness.

You'll spend a good hour here - two if you're thorough with the displays. The heritage centre covers local history alongside the literary angle, so even if Austen doesn't particularly move you, there's enough about the village and the building's evolution to make it worthwhile. It's particularly good if you've got older kids who are studying Austen or early 19th-century history.

The setting matters. Godmersham is a proper village, and the park around the house is lovely for a walk. If you're camped at Dunn Street Farm just down the road - barely twenty minutes away - this makes an easy morning or afternoon out. The location between Faversham and Canterbury also means you could pair it with a bigger day exploring either town.

One thing worth checking before you go: opening hours can be limited, so ring ahead or look online first. It's not the sort of place that's useful if you just happen to drive past and hope it's open. But if you're planning ahead and you're interested in Kentish social history or Austen's connections to the area, it's absolutely worth the trip.
