Thread Wood

Thread Wood is a proper working forest just outside Faversham where you can actually walk among the trees rather than gawp at them from a visitor centre. It's ancient woodland - the sort of place where you'll find bluebells in spring if you time it right, and decent canopy coverage that keeps things cool even on sticky summer days.

You're essentially free to roam on foot, picking your own route through the mixed broadleaf and conifer stands. The paths are workable but not manicured - expect mud after rain and a few fallen branches to negotiate. This is woodland as it actually is, not a theme park version. Walkers will get the most from it, particularly those happy to spend two or three hours wandering. Young kids might manage an hour before getting restless, unless they're the type to genuinely enjoy poking about in undergrowth.

It's free to access and there's no formal opening hours business - you just turn up. Car parking is limited and a bit ad-hoc, so go early on weekends. The forest itself is modest in scale compared to something like Ashdown or the Weald, but that's partly its appeal. No queues, no gift shop, just trees.

If you're based at Mount Ephraim Glamping Pods or Brook Farm just down the road, Thread Wood works as a morning walk before heading into Faversham proper for lunch. It won't blow your mind, but it's a solid way to get some forest air without faffing about.
