Go Ape Whinlatter

High above the Lake District floor, Go Ape Whinlatter is an outdoor adventure course where you're clipped into a harness and sent bouncing between platforms thirty feet up in the trees. It's the sort of place that sounds brilliant in theory and delivers exactly what you'd expect - genuine adrenaline, sore forearms, and a proper sense of accomplishment by the end.

The course winds through Whinlatter Forest, and you'll navigate rope walks, zip lines, and swinging obstacles while suspended among the conifers. It's physical work, not a gentle wander. First-timers often underestimate how much grip strength matters, and how much you'll laugh at yourself when you're dangling mid-swing. The views across the valley are excellent if you can stop sweating long enough to notice them.

This works brilliantly for teenagers and confident adults aged roughly twelve upwards. Younger kids struggle with the physical demands, and very small children will watch from below feeling thoroughly excluded. Allow three to four hours - partly because the course takes time, mostly because you'll queue and chat with other people who are equally terrified and exhilarated.

Keswick sits just a few miles south, making this easy to slot into a Lake District camping trip. The nearby sites - Castlerigg Hall deserves its five-star rating - offer proper facilities, and combining Whinlatter with walks around Catbells or Derwent Water keeps everyone occupied for a solid week. It's not cheap, and weather dependent, but if your crew enjoys heights and challenges, it's worth the detour from the water-based attractions.
