Glyder Fach

The walk up Glyder Fach is properly rewarding - a sharp, rocky peak that gives proper mountain scrambling without needing ropes or climbing experience. At 999 metres, it's not the highest in Snowdonia, but the views across the range are genuinely outstanding, especially on clearer days when you can pick out Snowdon itself across the valleys.

You'll need decent boots and a head for heights. The final push to the summit involves some proper rock work - hands-on scrambling over boulders that's exhilarating rather than dangerous. Allow three to four hours from the main car parks near Caernarfon, depending on your fitness. The Ogwen Valley approach is straightforward and well-trodden.

It's a cracking spot for experienced hikers rather than casual walkers. Children who've done some hill work will manage fine, but very young ones will struggle with the exposure at the top. Families might prefer the lower valleys or easier peaks nearby.

Start early if you're going in summer - the car parks fill up, and the weather can turn quickly even when it looks settled at base level. Bring proper waterproofs. The rock can be slippery when wet, which happens often in North Wales.
