Glassonby

A Roman fort sits here, quietly crumbling into the Cumbrian landscape just south of Carlisle. Glassonby isn't a headline attraction - there's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no crowds - but that's rather the point. What you get instead is the chance to wander over genuine archaeological remains from around 80 AD, when this was a proper military garrison on Hadrian's frontier.

The site itself is modest. Earthworks mark where the fort's defences once stood, and if you know what to look for, the layout becomes legible - the slight depressions where buildings once rose, the slopes of the rampart. It's the sort of place that rewards curiosity and imagination more than it rewards casual footfall. You're essentially reading the land like an open book.

This works best for anyone with genuine interest in Roman Britain - archaeologists, history buffs, walkers exploring the wider Pennine landscape. It won't hold restless children for long, and you'll need decent map-reading skills or local knowledge to find it properly. Allow an hour if you're serious about poking around, twenty minutes if you're just passing through.

Free to visit, obviously, since there's nothing formalised here. Spring and early summer are best - the grass is short enough to see the earthworks clearly, and the weather's usually cooperative. If you're staying at High Hall Farm Campsite nearby, it's absolutely worth the short drive out. Pair it with a proper walk through the Eden Valley for a full day.
