About Glaramara

The walk up Glaramara from Great Langdale is properly exhausting and absolutely brilliant. You're looking at a serious fell - 2,569 metres of Lake District rock and scree - that demands respect and decent boots. The push from the valley floor takes most walkers three to four hours up, then another couple down if your knees are cooperating.

What makes it worth the graft is the view once you breach the summit ridge. You're surrounded by proper high fell country - Scafell Pike dominates the skyline, and on a clear day you can see all the way across to the Irish Sea. The approach via Rossett Gill is relentless but straightforward; the scree descent on the way back is where most people find themselves moving carefully.

This isn't a family amble. It's for walkers who've done a few peaks and know what they're after. Families with young children would find the exposure and length absolutely knackering. Serious hikers, though, will rate it properly - the fell has character, and the scrambling sections near the top add a bit of technical interest without being dangerous if you're competent.

Camp at Great Langdale Campsite or splurge on Great Langdale Glamping, both just a few miles south, and you can tackle Glaramara fresh in the morning. Allow a full day, start early, and bring water. No fees for the peak itself - just your own fitness and determination.
