Gisburn Forest and Stocks - Forestry England

The forest sprawls across the Pennine moorland north of Settle, a proper mix of conifer plantations and open water that's surprisingly easy to underestimate until you're actually walking it. Stocks Reservoir sits at the heart of things - a long, narrow body of water that catches the light beautifully on clear days, ringed by woodland paths that range from gentle riverside strolls to more demanding hill routes.

It's the kind of place that rewards getting properly lost for a few hours. The forestry roads are well-maintained and marked, so navigating isn't a headache, but there's enough woodland to feel properly away from it all. Walkers will find miles of trails threading through the trees and along the water's edge. Families with younger kids might prefer the shorter circuits near the car parks rather than committing to the full loop - three miles is about the limit before grumbles set in. The views open up nicely if you push toward the higher ground, particularly on the western side where you get sight lines across to the surrounding hills.

Fishermen use it regularly, and the water itself is cold and inviting if you're that way inclined. Spring and early summer are the sweet spot - the light's better, the midges haven't properly moved in, and the whole place feels less like you're walking through a carpark on a Sunday. Free to access and unmanned, so go when it suits you. If you're based at Peaks and Pods or Calder Farm, this is a genuine asset within spitting distance - far better than driving elsewhere for a woodland walk.
