Giraffe

Standing high above the Pembrokeshire coastline, this elevated viewpoint gets its name from the distinctive rock formation that supposedly resembles a giraffe's neck when viewed from certain angles. I'll admit I had to squint a bit to see it, but the panoramic views across the Welsh countryside more than make up for any artistic interpretation required.

The walk up from Kilgetty takes about twenty minutes through pleasant farmland, though the final stretch is properly steep. Once you're up there, you can see right across to the Preseli Hills on a clear day, with patchwork fields rolling down towards Saundersfoot in the distance.

Families staying at nearby parks like Folly Farm Holiday Park or Cross Park Holiday Village will find this makes a decent morning expedition, especially with older children who won't moan about the climb. The younger ones might lose interest quickly once they've spotted the 'giraffe' - or failed to see it entirely.

Bring a flask and some sandwiches if you fancy making a proper outing of it. The grassy summit is ideal for a picnic, and there's usually a decent breeze to keep the midges at bay. Best avoided on overcast days when the view disappears into grey nothing, but on a bright morning it's a lovely spot to appreciate just how green and rolling this corner of Wales really is.
