Gillcambon Tarn

The walk up to Gillcambon Tarn from Penrith is steep enough that you'll feel you've earned the view, but it doesn't take long. This small mountain lake sits high in the fells with proper panoramic views across the Eden Valley and out towards the Lake District proper. On a clear day it's genuinely arresting - on a misty one, quite atmospheric.

It's the kind of place where walkers actually stop and sit for twenty minutes rather than just ticking it off. The tarn itself is modest in size, surrounded by moorland and bracken, and there's a real sense of being somewhere remote without needing to trek for hours. Most people manage the whole thing in a couple of hours from Penrith town centre.

Families with capable walkers will get plenty from it. Very young children might find the climb tedious, and there's not much else to do once you're there except enjoy the scenery and possibly have a packed lunch. For serious hikers it's a useful waypoint on longer fell walks rather than a destination in itself.

Coming from Riverside Tourer Park is convenient - you're basically on the doorstep of Penrith's walking country. Free to visit, obviously. The best light is generally late afternoon, and you want dry conditions because the moorland paths get boggy quickly. Worth the detour if you're staying locally and fancy a proper fell walk without committing to a full day in the mountains.
