Giant's Grave

A crumbling stone cairn on the Pennine moorland above Settle, Giant's Grave sits quietly at around 370 metres elevation - not exactly signposted or crowded. The site itself is modest: a Bronze Age burial mound that's been picked at by centuries of archaeology and weather, but standing there on a clear day, you can see why someone chose this spot. The views across Ribblesdale proper compensate for what the monument itself lacks in drama.

It's a walk, though. From Settle you're looking at a good two hours return to reach it, which means this appeals to serious walkers rather than families after a quick heritage tick. The actual site won't detain you long - fifteen minutes of looking at rocks, really - but the moorland experience is the draw. Bring decent boots and weather-appropriate kit; exposed upland gets windy and boggy fast.

Historically inclined visitors might find it interesting enough, particularly if you're exploring the broader Pennine archaeology story. It's free to visit, as you'd expect for an open moorland site with no visitor facilities whatsoever. There's no café, no car park right at the gate, nothing. Just stone and space.

If you're already staying at Ribblesdale Pods nearby, it makes sense as a walking extension rather than a destination in itself. Pair it with proper exploration of the Settle-Carlisle Railway area and the valley walks - the Grave alone isn't quite worth a special trip, but it slots into a solid weekend in the Dales.
