Gelli Diogyn

The remains at Gelli Diogyn sit quietly in the Carmarthenshire countryside near Whitland, easy to miss if you're not looking for them. This is a Neolithic burial chamber - what archaeologists call a portal dolmen - dating back around 5,500 years. Two large upright stones frame the entrance, with a capstone perched on top, all that survives of what was once a fully enclosed tomb.

It's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick snap for Instagram. You're standing in front of genuine prehistoric engineering, even if what remains looks almost abstract. The setting is farmland and quiet roads, which means the atmosphere is genuinely peaceful rather than theme-park precious.
