Allt Cilowen

Dense woodland that sprawls across the Carmarthenshire countryside near Whitland, Allt Cilowen is the sort of forest you stumble into rather than plan a day around. It's proper old-growth stuff - tall conifers and mixed broadleaf trees creating that damp, quiet atmosphere you only get when the canopy is thick enough to muffle sound. Footpaths wind through without much fanfare or signposting, which means you need to know what you're after or be prepared to explore.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination forest with visitor centres or cafes - just genuine woodland where you can actually think. For families with young kids, it depends entirely on tolerance for "nothing to actually do" - the forest itself is the thing, not attractions within it.
