Allt Coynant

The forest floor at Allt Coynant is properly mossy, the kind of place where your boots sink slightly with each step and the air feels damp no matter what the weather's been doing. It's a working woodland in Carmarthenshire, just outside Whitland, and while it doesn't have the dramatic gorge walks of some Welsh forests, there's something genuinely peaceful about wandering through the trees here.

You're looking at a fairly modest spread - more of an afternoon stop than a full day's expedition. The paths wind through mixed woodland with decent tree cover, so it's decent for keeping the sun off on a hot day. If you're camping at Frowen Fields or Llandissilio Holiday Park, both within a couple of miles, this makes a logical morning ramble before heading to somewhere with more structure. Families won't be overwhelmed by crowds, which is refreshing, though there's not a huge amount to capture young children's attention beyond the basic scramble through the woods.

Walkers passing through Carmarthenshire will find it worth a detour if you've got an hour spare, particularly after rain when the moss is at its most vivid. There's no admission charge and facilities appear minimal - go prepared with water and snacks. Llain Farm Glamping is a bit further out but gives you the option of combining this with other forest walks in the area. On balance, it's a solid local spot rather than a destination in itself, but if you're already staying nearby, you'd be daft not to spend some time among the trees.
