Carn-Wen

The walk up Carn-Wen rewards you with views across the Carmarthenshire hills that stretch all the way to the Brecon Beacons on a clear day. It's a proper little peak - nothing daunting, but enough of a climb to feel like you've earned the summit. The path is straightforward enough, taking about 45 minutes from the nearest trailhead, though the exact route depends on where you start around Whitland.

This is walker territory, frankly. You won't find a cafe or visitor centre at the top, just moorland, bracken, and seriously good panoramic views. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the final push a bit much. The whole outing, including a proper nose around at the summit, takes a couple of hours maximum.

Timing-wise, go early morning or late afternoon when the light hits the landscape properly. Midday sun can flatten the views. Summer's fine, but autumn is genuinely better - clearer air, fewer midges, and the heather gives the hillside a bit of colour.

If you're staying at one of the local camps - Frowen Fields is particularly well-rated, just over three miles away, or Llandissilio at under five - Carn-Wen makes a solid half-day excursion. It's the sort of walk that connects you to the landscape without demanding your entire day or specialist gear. Worth doing if you're in the area, though don't shift your holiday plans specifically to climb it.
