Tre-wern Wood

Tre-wern Wood is a proper forest walk just outside Whitland in Carmarthenshire - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's woodland rather than a manicured country estate, which means you get the real thing: dense trees, uneven paths, and that lovely smell of damp earth and pine. The tracks wind through decent-sized stands of mixed woodland, and on a clear day the views open up across the Towy Valley.

This is ideal for anyone who wants a proper country walk without the tourist crowd. Families with kids aged six and up will enjoy it, though younger ones might find the uneven ground tricky. Walkers get more out of it than casual strollers - allow two hours to do it justice rather than a quick thirty-minute loop. The paths aren't signed brilliantly, so take a map or know where you're heading.

It's free to access as far as I can tell, and open year-round. Spring's pleasant when everything's coming back, but autumn's when the woodland actually feels special - shorter days, better light through the canopy. Winter can be muddy, fair warning.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Westwales Camping Pods or Llain Farm are both close - Tre-wern works as a solid morning activity before heading into Whitland for lunch. It's not dramatic enough to plan a trip around on its own, but combined with the local countryside it's genuinely worth adding to an afternoon's exploring.
