Gaumer Hill

Gaumer Hill rises unexpectedly from the Lincolnshire flatlands near Horncastle - a proper little summit that rewards the modest climb with views across the Wolds. It's not dramatic stuff, but that's rather the point. This is honest countryside walking territory, the sort of place where you notice the light changing across fields rather than gasp at alpine vistas.

The hill itself is best tackled as part of a wider ramble through the Wolds, which loop and fold gently around this part of East Anglia. You're looking at an hour or so if you're just bagging the peak, longer if you're doing a proper circuit. Walkers will find it genuinely worthwhile - the effort is minimal, the solitude likely, and the agricultural landscape genuinely moving in that understated English way. History types might nose about for Napoleonic connections (the Wolds have plenty of military heritage), though Gaumer Hill itself keeps its secrets.

All three nearby campsites make it a doddle to base yourself here. Oxcombe Campsite, just 1.5 miles away and highly rated, puts you within spitting distance. Three Horseshoes is barely further at 2.4 miles, whilst Lincolnshire Glamping offers a cushier option if you're not the tent-pitching type.

Weather-wise, spring and autumn give you the clearest views and the most pleasant underfoot conditions. Summer crowds the roads without improving visibility much. Don't expect Snowdon - expect something quieter and altogether more authentic.
