Garnons Hill

The walk up Garnons Hill takes about twenty minutes from the car park, and on a clear day you can see right across Herefordshire to the Welsh hills. It's nothing dramatic - we're talking 300 metres or so - but it's a proper little workout if you're not used to climbing, especially the final push through the bracken.

What you get at the top is space. Real, genuine space. No tarmac, no visitor centre, no crowds trying to get the perfect Instagram shot. Just views that stretch for miles, the sort of thing that makes you understand why people live out here. On a grey day it's atmospheric; on a sunny afternoon it's genuinely lovely.

This works best for walkers who aren't after a dramatic peak or technical challenge. Families with sturdy legs will manage it fine, though younger kids might need cajoling on the last bit. Birdwatchers do well here too - you get good sightings if you're patient. Allow an hour, really, to make it worth the drive from Hereford, which is barely ten minutes away anyway.

The real appeal is that it doesn't feel manicured or managed. You're very much on your own up there, which some people love and others find a bit bleak. If you're camping at Preston Campsite or Moorhampton just outside town, it's an easy morning or evening walk. But it's not the sort of place you'd plan a weekend around - more of a "we're in Hereford anyway" job.
