Garn Wen

The walk up Garn Wen rewards you with proper views across Herefordshire - nothing dramatic, but the sort of landscape that makes you understand why people stay in these parts. It's a modest peak near Hereford, the kind of local spot that doesn't attract coach parties but deserves a morning or afternoon if you're camping nearby.

The climb itself is straightforward. You'll gain height steadily through farmland and woodland, nothing that'll leave you gasping, and the paths are generally well-trodden. Most people allow around two hours up and back, depending on fitness and how often you stop to look around. The summit view spans across the valleys and towards the Welsh border - on a clear day it's genuinely worth the effort.

Walkers and families with children old enough to manage a couple of miles will get the most from this. It's not a fortress or a viewpoint tower, just the hill itself and the walking. If your kids expect amusement arcades or ice cream vans at the top, they'll be disappointed. If they like spotting sheep and rolling down the other side, they'll have a brilliant time.

Stay at any of the nearby campsites - Offas Dyke Retreat, Olchon Valley Campsite, or Grove Farm Glamping - and you've got an easy local walk that fills a morning without eating into a longer day trip to somewhere else.
