Gallowsclough Hill

Getting to the top of this modest Cheshire peak requires a proper bit of legwork through Delamere Forest, but the views across the surrounding countryside make it well worth the effort. The hill sits within one of England's largest areas of woodland, and the climb takes you through some lovely mixed forest before emerging onto more open ground near the summit.

Families with older children will manage the walk fine, though little ones might struggle with the distance and some steeper sections. It's free to access, naturally, and you'll want to allow a good two hours for the round trip from the nearest car park. The summit itself isn't dramatically high, but you get cracking views over the Cheshire Plain on a clear day.

Walkers and anyone after a bit of fresh air will get the most from this one. The forest paths can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential. Best tackled in spring or autumn when the woodland is at its most attractive and you won't be battling summer crowds.
