Gallows Wood

Walk into Gallows Wood and you're immediately swallowed by mature trees - oaks, chestnuts, the lot. It's properly atmospheric, especially when the light filters through the canopy on an autumn afternoon. The woodland near Dunmow isn't large, so don't expect hours of roaming, but that's partly its charm. You can work through it in a decent walk without the kind of leg-sapping distance that makes families grind to a halt.

This is walker territory rather than a picnic destination. The paths wind naturally through the trees, and there's enough undergrowth and woodland character to make it feel genuine - not some manicured park. You'll get the most from it if you're doing a longer loop through the area rather than treating it as a standalone stop. It works brilliantly as a cooling-off stretch between other Essex attractions, or if you're based at Hill Farm campsite or Hidden Gem Glamping nearby, an easy morning ramble before breakfast.

Timing-wise, allow an hour or so depending on how slowly you potter. Spring brings bluebells if you're lucky. Winter can be muddy - proper muddy - so boots matter. The wood costs nothing to enter and operates on the honour system.

Kids who like climbing trees and building dens will get on with it. Older walkers after solitude will find it peaceful. But if you need facilities, sculpture trails, or dramatic vistas, you'll be disappointed. It's a wood. A good one, but honest about what it is.
