Gallaber Park

The moorland around Clitheroe pulls you in different directions, but Gallaber Park is where you actually want to spend time. It's a proper nature reserve - the sort of place where you can wander without crowds, spot curlews if you time it right, and feel like you've genuinely escaped rather than just driven twenty minutes outside town.

The reserve sits on open moorland with walking trails that vary from gentle loops to proper hikes depending on what you fancy. You're looking at heather, bracken, and bog in equal measure - bring decent boots. The views across the Ribble Valley are the real draw here, especially if you catch it on a clear day when you can see for miles. Birdwatchers get genuinely excited about this place; it's working moorland management, not just a pretty postcard.

You'll want at least two hours to do it justice, longer if you're the type who stops to identify every bird call. It works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Hedgerow Luxury Glamping is only a few miles away, as are Peaks and Pods and Malham Glamping Pods further up. Build it into a wider moorland circuit rather than treating it as a standalone trip.

Families with young children might find the terrain a bit much for little legs, but older kids and proper walkers will get a lot from it. The lack of facilities means you need to plan ahead - bring water, snacks, the lot. It's quiet precisely because it's not marketed as an attraction, which is half the appeal.
