Gaer Stone

Standing at 419 metres, this modest peak offers surprisingly good views across the Shropshire Hills without the crowds that flock to the Long Mynd. The walk up from Willstone takes about 45 minutes through typical border country - sheep pastures giving way to rougher moorland dotted with gorse and heather.

Hikers looking for a proper workout won't find it here, but families with older children will appreciate the manageable climb and the genuine sense of achievement at the top. The summit itself is marked by a modest cairn, and on clear days you can see across to the Welsh hills.

What makes Gaer Stone worthwhile is its accessibility combined with that proper hill-walking feeling. Unlike some of the more popular peaks nearby, you're likely to have the place largely to yourself, especially midweek. The descent back to Willstone is gentle enough that even less experienced walkers won't struggle.

Pack a thermos and some sandwiches - the summit is a lovely spot for a picnic when the weather's cooperating.
